Plan Drupal content types before designing pages

A page design can hide an important question: what is the content made of? If every piece of information lives in one large text field, editors may repeat work and listings become harder to maintain. Before choosing layouts, identify the information your organization publishes and the ways it needs to appear.

Look for content with a shared purpose

Make a short inventory of articles, services, locations, people, and other recurring information. Ask whether each group has its own fields, publishing process, or listing requirements. Create a content type because the information has a useful structure, not simply because two pages happen to look different.

Choose fields that have a clear job

A service might need a title, short description, body, and contact link. Keep a separate field when the information will be reused, filtered, validated, or presented differently. Avoid turning every decorative detail into an editorial decision. A simpler form is easier to complete consistently.

Define how content appears in lists

Decide what a visitor should learn from a card before opening the full page. An intentional summary often works better than cutting off the first paragraph. Think about missing images and long titles as well as ideal examples, so the listing remains usable when editors publish real content.

Include the publishing team early

Walk through the editing screen with the people who will use it. Check labels, help text, required fields, and preview behavior. Agree who writes, reviews, publishes, and retires content. A technically flexible content model can still fail if those responsibilities are unclear.

Test the model with real examples

Enter several pieces of representative content before building every template. Include an unusually short article, a long service name, and a page with no image. Adjust the structure while changes are still inexpensive, then document the decisions for future editors.
