What should monthly website support cover?
A support plan works best when both sides understand what the time is for. A list of possible services is useful, but the real value comes from choosing the right work for your website and keeping a record of what changed. Start with a practical backlog rather than assuming every task belongs in one monthly fee.
Separate maintenance from project work
Routine fixes, content adjustments, and small layout improvements can often be planned within a monthly allocation. A major version upgrade, a new integration, or a redesign may need a separate estimate. Ask your provider to explain where that boundary sits before work starts, including how investigation time is handled.
Keep one prioritized list
Capture issues in a shared place with a page URL, the expected behavior, and steps to reproduce the problem. Add business context: a broken enquiry form is different from a cosmetic issue on a rarely visited page. Agree the order with your provider so a limited allocation goes toward the most useful work.
Make capacity visible
For a five-hour plan, review how much time is available and what each task is likely to need. If an item expands during investigation, pause and agree the next step. Clarify how unused hours, extra time, and urgent requests are treated instead of relying on assumptions.
Ask for a useful handover
A short work record should identify the change, the affected pages, and the checks performed. Keep release references and any follow-up tasks with it. This gives the next person enough context to understand why the site behaves as it does and avoids repeatedly investigating the same issue.
Review the plan as the site changes
A website with frequent campaigns may need a different rhythm from a small information site. Revisit the allocation when your publishing schedule, integrations, or internal team changes. Discuss coverage windows and response commitments explicitly; a monthly allocation does not automatically mean round-the-clock support.
